This is primarily because few other games have inspired me to go about taking photos quite like that game and partly because few other games really do the in-game camera as well as GTA-V.
Since my last PVWV post, I have picked up an XBox One and more recently a Nintendo Switch. Both of these consoles have the ability to take screenshots quickly in-game. This has opened up more opportunities for me to play with gaming photos/screenshots.

Showcasing some of the images captured using the various methods of screenshot or in-game camera will be the main purpose of these PVWV posts. Of course, the limitations this places on the shots I can take means often a character will be the centrepiece of the shot or it'll be an image from a cutscene.

Today's focus is Red Dead Redemption since my most recent post was all about my love for this game it seemed the most appropriate next PWVW.
I was given this game by my sister after she had finished with it. I’d heard at release that this was worth checking out but I don’t tend to go out of my way to pick up new games unless I'm already a huge fan of the series as with the GTA games. So, it was a few years after release that I finally cracked open the Red Dead Redemption box and slotted the disc into my PS3.

I begin my Wild West adventure playing as the former criminal, John Marston, by taking an excruciating train journey. As usual, there’s a loud, self-righteous asshole talking loudly at the lady next to him. This particular asshole has an affinity for the good Lord. There are also two old ladies loudly proclaiming how civilisation is coming to the local savages; I’m sure they're thrilled. At some point someone mentions politicians being corrupt which shows nothing has changed in the last 100 years or so. Mr Marston has the same look on his face as I do during this experience which immediately endears me to him.

Arriving at a train station we take a short trip to the local drinking and whoring establishment to meet our guide. The dishevelled old goat takes us on a ride to a rundown fort in the middle of nowhere. As one might expect this is not a quiet and relaxing holiday resort with hot springs and champagne on tap. As such it’s not long before the famed western hospitality sees me shot and bleeding on the ground. Not an ideal start, however, salvation appears in the form of a local farmer who clearly has taken leave of her senses and decides to pick up a pretty ropey looking half dead cowboy. I’m even wearing a black hat which really should tell her all she needs to know about me. Clearly, she hasn't watched many westerns.

The game proper begins as John wakes up having been patched up by the doctor at our saviour’s homestead. We begin life in the old west by assisting Bonnie McFarlane, the farmer who helped John. We get a gentle introduction to the various controls, mini-games and for some reason; a crash course in herding cattle. Cows will clearly play an important part in our revenge mission as we go after the guy who rather unfairly shot us at the fort. Maybe he’s lactose intolerant.
As is a tradition with Rockstar and most other sandbox games we get to move the story and explore the wider game world at pretty much our own pace. You can rush around, quick travelling from mission to mission to complete it as soon as possible or you can ride off into the sunset to shoot wildlife and lasso miscreants.

The more you ride around and take the scenic route from place to place the more likely you are to encounter the denizens of the Red Dead world, from the human populous of residents, lawmen, gang members and merchants to the interesting and varied wildlife. Some of these will pass you by with barely a glance in your direction but others will interact in very interesting ways.

The random encounters keep things interesting and make the world seem more alive. I experienced around 35 unique encounters, many of which were repeated numerous times. The varied areas, timings and success of each encounter means it rarely feels like you're repeating yourself too much. Some of the events occur more often than others.

You will, for example, regularly find yourself being unhorsed by a random criminal while out and about. Many players, I'm sure, quickly learn after the first embarrassing loss of your horse that this particular situation can be dealt with by simply whistling for your horse, causing it to buck the thief off.

The rarer encounters can be quite fun or quite disturbing. At one point I was blown up in quite spectacular fashion when I stumbled upon a couple of guys transporting dynamite, as I approached their camp one of the pair made the last stupid decision in a life I can only assume was littered with them and lit a cigar causing the TNT to explode. At the disturbing end of the scale, one encounter you may come across is an NPC that is apparently grieving over a dead body, after a short time watching they will commit suicide sometimes by gunshot and sometimes by drinking a bottle of, what I can only assume, is poison.

Seems we've got some kind of stand-off... In Mexico

The feeling Red Dead invokes through simple desert wandering is remarkable, never more so for me than when day turns to night and the sounds of the desert envelope you. Whether you’re on a horse or on foot you can feel quite alone at times. The ever-present danger of wild animals and bandits means you don’t really feel you can relax while out exploring because the moment you forget yourself you’ll be set upon by a cougar who fancies nothing more than a munch of your soft and squishy bits.

Saving your progress and using the fast travel system is taken care of with a simple campfire which only encourages the feeling of exploration as you bed down for the night to save your progress with the stars above your head and only rattlesnakes and tumbleweed for company. I rarely used the fast travel option simply because travelling by horse across the vast map was such a pleasure and kept me immersed in the game an For those who have played RDR enough to find themselves in Mexico, I’m sure you will be familiar with the song that plays as you mount your horse at the beach and start riding into the heart of this barren country.
The song is beautiful, I feel it perfectly highlights what you’re going through to rescue some sort of life for yourself and your family. The distance travelled and hardships endured to simply see your loved ones again. This is no accident; the song was written for the game to capture this moment and damn did Jose Gonzalez and Rockstar do a great job of it. There are 3 other songs which also beautifully capture the feeling of the game as they are played. I won’t go into them here because they might spoil things for you if you haven’t played the game.
Now, the story, the reason we're here in the first place. It is arguably one of the best storylines you’ll encounter in a video game. Your journey takes you through John’s attempt at redemption from his previous life by chasing down members of his old gang across the old west. I felt the pacing of this was well done, albeit with too long spent in Mexico, the ending is really quite outstanding. Most characters involved in your story are memorable and generally invoke some emotion be it hatred, frustration or fondness which easily help to make this such an excellent title.

As the game develops and you open more of the absolutely stunning landscape you’ll find yourself spending time simply admiring the scenery. Tall Trees, an area you get to explore late in the game has a snowy forest which is a particularly pretty and isolated area that you can stop and enjoy for many minutes before a bear appears and messes up your day.

One of the most impressive aspects of Red Dead Redemption is how well it has stood up, graphically, story-wise and even in how the game plays. There are plenty of times I go back to games I've played from this era in gaming and find the graphics are just terrible, the gameplay is clunky or the fun I had playing it is simply not there anymore. Since my original playthrough of this game on the PS3, it has arrived on XBox One backwards compatibility and even recently been remastered in 4K. Unfortunately, as I don't own an XBox One X I am unable to play the 4K version but the regular XBox One version is still beautiful and the skyboxes in particular still blow me away at times.

Red Dead Redemption is a game I recommend to anyone and everyone. If you still haven't played it, find a way. The easiest option is likely through XBox backwards compatibility. Possibly a second-hand copy of PS3 if you still have your own Sony console sitting around somewhere.

The sequel has finally been announced and has a trailer which showcases some amazing scenery and a gritty looking storyline. The perfect combination for this franchise and I will be purchasing it immediately and desperately hoping it lives up to my expectations.

I still think it should've been called Red Dead Revenant.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The previous entry was all shots from the PS3 version of the game. The subsequent PC release proved to be too tempting to resist and once I had fitted a graphics card worthy of the title I was able to turn the settings at least some way up to really start to enjoy the impressive detail Rockstar put in this game.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The lighting, in particular, is outstanding and is one thing Rockstar has done well time and again.

"We’re doing our absolute best to stay on top of Android updates" said Motorola spokesman, Geoffrey Fluffing. Mr Fluffing stated that Motorola "has recently become known for rapid OS updates". This seems to be a knock-on effect of the acquisition by Google in 2011. It seems they intended to continue the trend and get Lollipop into the hands of their customers as soon as possible. Last year the company, who were recently acquired by Lenovo, even beat Google to the release of KitKat on the Nexus 4, and with the recent ‘soak test’ for Android 5.0 on the Moto X 2014 they’re at it again.

Now Motorola look to go one better and have actually announced the next Android version before Google got a chance. “We knew that the excitement for the next version of this fabulous operating system would be here sooner rather than later so we just went ahead and got it over and done with" quipped Mr Fluffing.

We don’t think Google will mind, stated Geoffrey, after all they’re probably so busy trying to work out how to sell the Nexus 6 I doubt anyone is reading the news.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7120896378090979518.post-91659903815812680692014-04-12T23:28:00.001+10:002014-11-09T20:17:43.987+11:00Is KitKat uptake really slower than Jelly Bean was?I fancied putting a few thoughts down after reading this article by Kevin Tofel based off a report from Chitika about Android platform distribution. The report suggests and Kevin writes about the fact KitKat adoption and uptake appears to be slower than with Jelly Bean according to Chitika's report.

My first reaction was that this can't be correct considering a number of manufacturers have pushed KitKat updates to their devices far quicker than previous OS versions, Motorola notably bringing it to their Moto X before Google had it on their own Nexus 4.

I had a quick look at the Android distribution numbers from Android Police and compared initial percentages for both OS versions.

Jelly Bean was released at Google I/O on the 27 June 2012. KitKat was released 31 October 2013 on the Nexus 5. Around 4 months later (121 days for KitKat, 127 for Jelly Bean) we have percentages from the Android developer dashboard. These run to 2.5% for KitKat and 2.7% for Jelly Bean which makes it look like initial uptake of Jelly Bean was higher but in fact this figure, being a percentage, fails to take into account the shear increase in Android devices in the market. When JellyBean was announced and released at Google I/O 2012 we had around 400 million device activations and when KitKat was released we had more than 1 billion activations.

If we take 2.7% of JellyBean at 400 million we get 10.8 million, compare this to 2.5% of KitKat at 1 billion we get 25 million. So immediately KitKat has a far higher number of devices running the new OS.

This all means that as a percentage measure of all Android devices KitKat is growing at a slighty slower pace than Jelly Bean but on a per device measure KitKat is growing exponentially faster. If you take the number of Jelly Bean devices activated and put that up against the 1 billion you'd have only 1.08% so actually KitKat has grown over 200% quicker, which pretty much shows that the answer to the question posed by this post is a pretty resounding no.

If we expand out to 150 days we get 5.3% for KitKat and 6.7% for Jelly Bean, but again looking at the assumed device numbers as per the previous calculation we have 26.8 million for Jelly Bean and 53 million for KitKat, again, a massive difference there and close to the 200% increase as per the 120 day calculation.
Well the latest version is still all the things it was before, it's crude, crazy and perpetually violent.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I've put a good number of hours into the game since buying it, most of these have been spent exploring the world Rockstar created. One of the most impressive things about this game is that they've made it look better than GTA IV despite it still being on the PS3/XBox and not the next generation of consoles. This has been achieved almost exclusively with lighting. When you get right down to the textures they're not all that impressive but the way they light Los Santos and Blaine County is impressive.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Something that has been developed well for this game after introduction in previous titles was the mobile phone as a way of interacting with the game world in a new way. Each main character has his own phone modelled on a real life equivalent. Michael uses the iFruit (iPhone) Franklyn uses something that is very close to Samsung's Galaxy range and Trevor uses a Windows Phone, I'll hazard a guess it's based on the Nokia Lumias. What the phone choice of each character and their respective levels of wealth and social standing say about how Rockstar view the current mobile phone wars I won't touch on here.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Now the reason for this post and one of my favourite aspects of the game so far is the Snapmatic application that allows you to take photos using your phone camera. This has been a great deal of fun for me, I've spent a good number of hours just wandering around snapping pictures of the game world in all it's glory.
I spent a bit of time making the Google Cards style one below so you can use that to get started!

To get started you'll need to download the XML file from my Drive account: GoogleCardsUI.xml (select Download) or Dropbox: GoogleCardsUI.xml (long press/right click save link). I would suggest doing this on the device you intend to use it on as it'll be immediately available to load into Agenda Widget.

Once you have downloaded the file, open up Agenda Widget into the main settings menu. Tap the top right icon with 4 lines and a small triangle in the lower right.

Select Import and Browse. Now you need to locate the file on your phone. If you downloaded it directly from your device it will be located in Download

Select GoogleCardUI.xml (This may be a random string if you downloaded it from Drive) and OK.

Hit Import and exit settings, your Agenda Widget should now be displaying the new theme.
The following image is a comparison of the Red Bull, McLaren and Ferrari cars accelerating down the straight from Turns 2 to 3 in Melbourne.

The end plate of the McLaren is tipping back, a small but noticeable amount. This isn't the only image of the effect, there are some from testing showing a dramatic change, it certainly suggests McLaren are doing something. Yet the rules this year are even more stringent on flex across the wing in an attempt to prevent the teams attempting these sort of designs.

It will be interesting to see if this story develops like the Mercedes "F Duct", "W Duct" Super DRS whatever you want to call it!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7120896378090979518.post-33827538137261599332012-03-20T16:51:00.007+11:002012-03-23T16:14:03.311+11:00The 2012 Australian Grand Prix - Mercedes DRS "F-Duct"

The opening race of the season is always special, certainly it’s the first opportunity to really see the pecking order of the new cars, first chance to see the cars going absolutely flat out during Qualifying, no sandbagging, no high or low fuel just pure lap time. Additionally for those who are intrigued by the technical side of F1 as well it’s an excellent opportunity observe the latest developments.

I've only started to enjoy the more intricate and technical side of F1 in the last few years, wanting to understand the Brawn "double diffuser" is what got me started, so I'm a bit of a newbie in that sense but this was a great chance to try and snap a few photos of the bits that aren't easy to see and pass them onto people who know what they’re talking about! Craig Scarborough (ScarbsF1) for example.

The one particular development that has intrigued the media and fans is the supposed Mercedes "F duct". Now as you may know the F duct was the name given to the development McLaren established at the start of 2010. They fed air from an intake on the front, through the car and onto the rear wing when the driver had their knee blocking a duct within the cockpit, in doing so they could “stall” the wing and thus reduce the downforce generated on the straights. This gave them great straight-line speed without compromising the overall downforce needed for the corners. It was named due to the intakes location on the “F” of Vodafone on the McLaren nose.

Anyway.

The theory behind the Mercedes “F duct” is that when the DRS is opened a small duct is revealed allowing air to pass through, the air is directed to the front wing and vented to create the stalling effect, but at the front of the car. This would reduce drag but additionally stabilise the car. With just the DRS open you lose lots of rear downforce but nothing at the front, risking the back end being extremely unpredictable. This is explained in much more detail over at CraigScarborough’s blog.

I went to the track on the Friday with the intention of getting some photos of the DRS flap opened on the front running cars to try to find a team copying Mercedes or confirm Mercedes are the only team doing this. This isn’t as easy as it sounds due to only having General Admission tickets and attempting to get a sharp and clear photo of a car through a fence as it accelerates with the DRS flap open meant some serious panning with my camera.

I managed to get decent shots of a few teams from the exit of turn 2 as the cars head down the straight from T2 to T3. Unfortunately the wet sessions meant DRS wasn't used as much and on top of that I only really got my eye in during the latter stages of FP2 so was unable to capture as many shots as I really wanted too.

As can be seen in the images, certainly McLaren and Red Bull had nothing resembling a duct behind their DRS flaps. The McLaren rear wing has no space for something like this and they would need an entirely different rear wing end plate to incorporate this idea. Ferrari has a dark space and a small patch that could be hiding something but it seems unlikely, unfortunately the Ferrari photos aren’t very sharp, there hasn't been anything more to suggest that Ferrari have this idea in place since I took the shots.

Mercedes "F-Duct"

Looking through my photos from Saturday I realised I had managed to get a fairly decent image of the Mercedes "F Duct" rear wing in action. Below is an image comparing the closed DRS flap and open revealing the duct.

The duct is visible in the area of the image I've blown up (top left). It's the slightly triangular shape revealed when the DRS is opened.
